On the contrary, one could say that before the fifteenth cen­tu­ry one didn’t find any discourse concerning ‘the pri­va­te’, as we would understand it today. The pri­va­te col­lec­tion (and maybe along with this the pri­va­te, as such) developed parallel to and as a result of the banking system and the economic growth in renaissance Florence and Venice, and it was also here in these regions that the first pri­va­te col­lec­tions have their home.
