On the contrary, one could say that before the fifteenth century one didn’t find any discourse concerning ‘the private’, as we would understand it today. The private collection (and maybe along with this the private, as such) developed parallel to and as a result of the banking system and the economic growth in renaissance Florence and Venice, and it was also here in these regions that the first private collections have their home.
